Storyboards

This is a place for the semester's weekly storyboards, at least the ones pertaining to the 'caveman seeking his metrosexual self' theme.
Probably not really necessary to file them separately, but what the hell, it might even be useful.

The mechanical bull ride is no match for the hunting talents of our caveman friend

To start the ball rolling with abstract and dificult-to-understand storyboards, here's a good one.

To begin, I have taken an abstraction of the word 'bullride' to mean something along the lines of 'stirring violin performance'. Ole Bornemann was a Norwegian violinist who toured extensively through the United States and attempted to found a Norwegian colony in Pennsylvania in 1852. He often went by the nickname 'Bull', hence the reasoning. I felt this was a worthy interpretation for the interesting fact that this was relayed to me from dictionary.com - if they felt it was necessary then clearly it has some significance, albeit unknown to me.

For this storyboard I am depicting a classic gag inspired by the film 'Animal House' - the time honoured joke of a man playing a violin, then getting it beaten up by another man who is tired of his playing. To fulfil the 'mechanical' quotient, the violin is in this case an electric violin, and Bornemann himself is some kind of recreation in the form of a robot. He has a very norwegian looking beard though.

Seldom do cavemen drink mageritas

This one, I got lazy on. I'll admit that. No abstraction of the original phrase here, instead we see some rough cavemen sitting around drinking beer. Another then enters the room shouting 'anyone for mageritas?' and... gets beaten up for it. That sounds quite predictable I know, and I hope it does not degenerate into a sort of theme on my part.

Still, you know what they say - why bother with proper writing when you can just disguise your writing flaws with violence? If you don't know how to end a scene, just end it with someone getting hurt. It never fails to amuse.

I've also tried to incorporate part of the global theme in this one, if you can't make sense of my drawing then you should note that the magerita-offering caveman is in some ways an embodiment of the metrosexual man.

The vacuum cleaner is an alien craft to the caveman...

For this storyboard the interpretation of the word 'craft' proides the most flexibility in the interpretation, as well as the most difficulty. It could mean an alien ship, and alien service (like a blacksmith or something), or even an alien skill. The skill could be interpreted as a career in deception, as the term is often used to descrbie the trade of a spy. It could even have allusions to the art of witchcraft.

I chose to depict the vacuum cleaner as another character to give it greater use within the scene. A FRENCH character, because french accents are always amusing. The caveman is, of course, an american. This gives the vacuum cleaner an alien status if we place it in the environment of the caveman as it is in an unfamiliar country.

The vacuum cleaner will consequently play the role of a french spy on american soil, thus fulfilling every aspect of the themed phrase. It will be attempting to spy on the caveman for unknown reasons, and the caveman will notice the agent as the segment 'to the caveman' implies some vouyeristic interaction between the two characters. I have yet to decide how to end this, so I will make the last up when i get there.

Note that I am now using flash to draw storyboards because after doing 1 sketch in it i have decided that it makes things look much nicer, due to the illusion of ink thickness and drawing style. I think youll find it much more pleasant to read.

I'm quite pleased with the look of this one, particularly this guy:

He just seems to be standing in a very cool way which really fits the part of the character. My strange ending ended up being the decision of doing something ironic with the expected way in which the characters would act. I thought it might be amusing to see these characters looking very professional and serious, then have one of them make an incredibly stupid mistake like running out in front of a car.
